so, we're gonna read Voluspa when we have a better turn out, because that shit is important! so we're gonna read about berserkers this week:
Berserkir Article
the berserkir part starts on page 18 of this article.
thanks to mike's initiative, we watched the 13th warrior today. it was both very good and very bad. its based on the character of Ibn Fadlan from last week's article.

so i think the plan for this week is reading Völuspá (the seeress' prophecy) from the Poetic Edda out loud! as a group. you don't have to read it before, but if you want to, it is here:
Poetic Edda 1936
be aware that this translation is from '36, and the books that we will have for sunday are from '96. but the content is pretty much the same.
Völuspá lays down the 'mythic timeline', and is one of the most descriptive sources of the event Ragnarök (doom of the gods) that there is. it is rad.

what we're reading this week:
Ibn_Fadlan_Montgomery_Second_Attempt
WARNING: rape happens in this document
which is one of the only documentary textual sources that we have of the 'viking' norsemen. prepare to be extremely stoked.
